Choctaw Nation 477 Youth Employment Program

Helping Native American Students Gain Work Experience

Are you a Native American student who is at least 16 years old and interested in getting a job? The Choctaw Nation 477 Youth Employment Program may be a great opportunity for you!

This program helps eligible Native American youth gain valuable work experience, develop job skills, and prepare for future careers.

You do not have to be Choctaw to apply! Students from other federally recognized tribes may also be eligible.

Who Can Apply?

According to the application guidance provided by our Indian Education Department:

  • Students must be at least 16 years old.

  • Students must be Native American.

  • Students younger than 18 will need a parent or guardian involved in the application process.

  • Applicants must complete the Choctaw Nation application and receive approval before beginning employment through the program.

Final eligibility and participation requirements are determined by the Choctaw Nation.

How to Apply

Step 1: Create a Choctaw Nation Portal Account

Visit the Choctaw Nation Member Portal to begin the application process. If you are younger than 18, have your tribal parent or guardian create or access the appropriate account. You can be from any Federally Recognized Native American tribe to apply.

Step 2: Find the Application

Once logged into the portal:

  1. Select Apply for Services.

  2. Choose Education from the dropdown menu.

  3. Scroll down and select 477 Youth Employment Program.

  4. Be sure to select the youth employment application, not the childcare application.

Step 3: Complete and Submit Your Application

Fill out the application carefully and submit all requested information.

Step 4: Watch for an Email

If you are younger than 18, Choctaw Nation staff may contact your parent or guardian by email and request a follow-up phone call.

Step 5: Complete the Employer Paperwork

After the initial application is reviewed, Choctaw Nation staff may send an employment packet that must be completed by your prospective employer.

Return the completed paperwork as directed by Choctaw Nation staff.

Step 6: Receive Approval Before Starting Work

Once you have received the required approval, you can begin working at an approved participating worksite.

Where Can Students Work?

Students may explore employment opportunities with businesses and organizations in Pittsburg County, including:

  • Local businesses and retail establishments

  • Restaurants and food service businesses

  • Childcare and after-school programs

  • Community organizations

  • School district departments and programs

  • Other employers willing to participate in the program

Important: Employment opportunities vary, and not every business is automatically an approved 477 worksite. Students should confirm placement requirements with their Choctaw Nation program representative.

Why Participate?

Having a job while attending school can help students build skills that will benefit them long after graduation, including responsibility, time management, communication, teamwork, customer service, and workplace professionalism.

Students also gain experience that can strengthen future resumes, scholarship applications, and college or career opportunities.
